About This Route
In Zion's Kolob Canyons District, the La Verkin Creek Trail leads to pristine swimming holes 3-6 miles from Lee Pass Trailhead. Deep, emerald pools under basalt cliffs offer secluded swims, less crowded than main canyon. This advanced route combines hiking with canyon swimming safety in Zion, featuring waterfalls and grottos. NPS permits day use; flows are lower here, but remoteness amplifies risks.
Safety Considerations
Flash flood danger in narrow sections; consult Hop Valley weather and creek gauges. Waterfalls create hydraulic hazards; scout pools before jumping. Hypothermia from shaded 55°F waters; time swims for midday sun. Poison ivy lines banks; stick to creek bed per Leave No Trace. REI advises against solo trips; inform rangers of plans.
Essential Gear
Yaktrax or similar for slick boulders, rash guard, waterproof phone case, and headlamp for early starts. Pack ample water purification tablets.
