About This Route
Cerberus Grotto in the Left Fork of North Creek (Subway area) features mixed rock and ice climbs up to 100 feet, best after rare winter freezes. WI4-5 grades, approach 9 miles RT via Kolob Reservoir trailhead. Permit mandatory; technical canyoneering entry. 6-10 hours; rappel out. Rare ice demands precise screws. Leave No Trace: melt snow for water, no new bolts.
Safety Considerations
Avalanches minimal but rock/icefall high; Petzl Lyra helmet essential. Hypothermia from wet approaches; NPS one gallon equiv in snow. Flash floods post-thaw; exit on rising water. Thin ice brittle; test tools. Bears active in Kolob; bear canister.
Essential Gear
Ice screws, petzls, crampons. 60m rope, wetsuit for grotto. Thermarest pads, MSR stove.
