About This Route
For expert paddlers, the headwaters Merced River to Little Yosemite Valley packs 4-5 miles of continuous Class IV-V whitewater. Hike 4 strenuous miles via Mist Trail or John Muir Trail from Happy Isles with boat (permit required). Continuous rapids showcase Lost Valley and granite slabs; takeout at backpacker campground. Multi-day trips possible with wilderness permit. NPS allows year-round access; no vehicle entry.
Safety Considerations
Extreme remoteness: no quick rescue; self-reliance essential. Rapids escalate above 3 feet; wood jams deadly. Hypothermia from 40°F water; scout every drop. Bear country mandates hard-sided canisters. Lightning risk on exposed approaches; start pre-noon. NPS mandates PFDs above Little Yosemite Valley. Altitude sickness at 6,000+ feet; acclimate first.
Essential Gear
Whitewater kayak like Pyranha Burn, Demo helmet, Bomber PFD. Full drysuit (Peak UK), breakdown paddle (AT), and creek boat skirt. Satellite phone or SPOT, group rescue gear (Z-drag kit). REI wildy guide packs: bivy, stove, 3-day food.
Emergency Tips
Carry inReach for SOS; no cell. Z-drag pinned boaters; avoid solo. Evac via trail to Valley floor (10 miles). Hypothermia: drysuit priority, group shelter.
