About This Route
From Crane Flat (Hwy 120), snowshoe 1.5 miles one-way to Tuolumne Grove's giant sequoias, a less-crowded Mariposa alternative with a historic tunnel tree. 400-foot descent then ascent; total 3 miles RT. Snowpack builds early here at 6,000 feet. NPS grooms sporadically; combines road walk with forested trail. Views of Hetch Hetchy reservoir on clear days. Best for fit beginners transitioning to intermediate.
Safety Considerations
Variable snow bridges over streams fail; probe before crossing. Lower elevation means wetter snow, increasing postholing without proper floatation. NPS stresses navigation: trails vanish under 2 feet snow. Hypothermia from damp cold; change socks midday. Minimal avy risk but tree wells deadly. Scenario: lost 2020 hiker postholed into well near grove; self-rescue with poles. Hydrate preemptively.
Essential Gear
DMS Helio 22 snowshoes; Leki Makalu poles. Icebug BUGbites boots, Outdoor Research Crocodiles gaiters. Anker powerbank for phone GPS.
