About This Route
The South Fork Merced River from Briceburg to McCabe Flat (or Railroad Flat for longer trips) is a premier Class II-III rafting run near Yosemite's boundary, about 10-18 miles depending on takeout. This Bureau of Land Management-managed stretch features boulder gardens, fun waves, and pools amid oak woodlands and granite outcrops. Managed by NPS and BLM, it's popular June through August when flows are 800-2,500 cfs per USGS gauges. Commercial outfitters like Zephyr offer guided trips, but private parties need shuttle planning. The route passes under Highway 140 and features landmarks like the Burro Trailhead. Water is frigid from Sierra snowmelt, and the remoteness demands self-sufficiency.
Safety Considerations
Pinch spots and meatball rapids like Guide's Revenge can flip rafts; scout every rapid using REI's scouting protocol. High water amplifies hydraulics, so avoid above 3,000 cfs. Hypothermia sets in fast below 55°F; rotate paddlers to stay warm. Rattlesnakes and poison oak thrive on shores; stick to the river. NPS emphasizes no swimming in rapids due to undercut rocks. Use the 'buddy system' and maintain visual contact. Afternoon thunderstorms can cause flash floods; monitor weather via NOAA. Portage hazardous sections like bedrock chutes. Follow Leave No Trace by using groovers for human waste.
Essential Gear
Required: NRS Big Water V PFDs, helmets (Dagger or Pro-Tec), splash jackets, and paddle leashes. Carry a repair kit, pump, maps (National Geographic Merced River), and satellite communicator like Garmin inReach. Dry suits for early season.
