Backpacking Safety: Lyell Canyon to Donohue Pass safety guide

About This Route

Lyell Canyon to Donohue Pass is a premier 24-mile out-and-back from Tuolumne Meadows, gaining 2,500 feet through lush meadows to the Sierra crest at 11,056 feet. Begin at Lyell Canyon trailhead, follow the John Muir Trail corridor past Lyell Glacier views, camp in designated sites. Permits essential for JMT quota. Ideal for JMT thru-hikers acclimating. Follow NPS bear storage rules and LNT by dispersing use in meadows.

Safety Considerations

Snow bridges over Lyell Fork fail in spring; probe with poles, per REI protocols. Donohue Pass thunderstorms deadly; summit early. River crossings hazardous May-July; use wading sticks. Glacier crevasses hidden; stay roped if venturing near. Wind chill drops temps 30 degrees; windshell required.
