About This Route
Closed to cars from late October, the 16-mile Glacier Point Road becomes a premier backcountry snowshoe route from Chinquapin to Glacier Point (elevation 7,214 feet). Popular out-and-back to Bridalveil Creek or full traverse; 1,000 feet gain over first miles. Jaw-dropping overlooks of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls iced over. NPS rates it strenuous; allow 2-3 days for thru, but day trips to McGurk Meadow (4 miles RT) suit intermediates. Conditions vary: wind-scoured corn snow to deep blower powder. Monitor NPS road status and CAIC avalanche bulletins.
Safety Considerations
Steep sections above 25 degrees pose avalanche risk; carry ice axe per NPS winter protocols for self-arrest. Route finding critical with cornices and whiteouts; GPS alone fails in crevasses (rare but possible). Hypothermia compounds with altitude sickness symptoms like headache. Group decisions based on slowest member, as per REI winter hiking tenets. Scenario: 2021 party benighted near Pohono Bridge; survived with bivy sacks but suffered mild hypothermia. Sun exposure burns despite cold; apply SPF 50 liberally. Leave No Trace: bury human waste 6-8 inches deep.
Essential Gear
