About This Route
The Lewis River channel, the park's sole open river for boating, links Lewis Lake to remote Shoshone Lake, North America's largest backcountry lake. Launch from Lewis Lake, navigate the 2-mile meandering channel with mild current past beaver dams to Shoshone's northwest arm. Explore coves like North Northwest Bay for camping (permit required). This advanced out-and-back or loop demands strong paddling skills; total distance 4-6 miles one way. NPS permits both AIS and backcountry.
Safety Considerations
Swift sections, strainers from fallen trees, and narrow bends heighten flip risks in 50-degree water. Hypothermia sets in fast without PFDs. Grizzlies frequent the area; travel in groups of 4+. Winds funnel through the channel; time for calm. No motors allowed; human-powered only. Clean gear rigorously for AIS. Reference NPS boating page for maps showing hazards like the Moose Creek inlet snag zone.
Essential Gear
Prioritize Wenonah Spirit II canoe stability, Astral V-Eight PFDs, and Werner Paddles. Pack Osprey dryduffel, PLB, and group first aid with SAM splints. Include topo map, headlamp, and 2-person tarp shelter.
Emergency Tips
Pin against strainer: push off upstream side. Capsize: link arms, float feet-first downstream. Evacuate to Shoshone shore for satellite signal. NPS backcountry rangers flyovers occasional; pre-file itinerary at Grant Visitor Center.
