About This Route
Trail Ridge Road, America's highest continuous paved road at 12,183 feet, spans 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake through Rocky Mountain National Park. Allowed for road and e-MTB with traffic; seasonal May-October. Grueling 4,000-foot climb tests endurance amid alpine meadows. NPS requires lights dawn/dusk. Shuttle-assisted one-ways popular.
Safety Considerations
Traffic is primary hazard; hug right, single-file per federal law. Altitude sickness peaks above treeline; symptoms hit 30% riders. Hypothermia even in summer; winds chill to freezing. Bighorn sheep, marmots distract. Lightning: below treeline by noon. REI advises group rides, pace 8-12mph.
