Longs Peak Boulderfield Backpacking Safety Guide safety guide

About This Route

The Longs Peak via Boulderfield route is RMNP's iconic overnight backpacking challenge, a 14-mile RT from Longs Peak trailhead to the Boulderfield at 12,700 feet, gateway to the 14,259-foot summit. Expect 5,000 feet gain over talus and tundra; permits mandatory at Estes Park office, with limited Boulderfield sites. NPS classifies this as expert terrain; prepare for technical Keyhole Ridge continuation.

Safety Considerations

Extreme altitude sickness; ascend gradually, using Diamox if prescribed. Lightning on the Homestretch deadly; NPS reports 20+ incidents since 2000, so bivouac low if storms brew. Bears habituated here; lock food in bearproof canisters 200 feet away. Rockfall frequent on ledges; helmet required. Hypothermia nights drop to 20F; monitor wind chill.

Essential Gear

Four-season tent (MSR Advance Pro), 0-degree bag, Black Diamond crampons if glaciated. PLB, SPOT beacon, altimeter watch. Petzl headlamp, repair kit.
