About This Route
Gem Lake Trail from Lumpy Ridge Trailhead is a 3.6-mile out-and-back with 1,000 feet gain to 9,350 feet, perfect for intermediate speedwork. Scramble finale rewards with lake views over Estes Park. Less trafficked than Bear Lake, suits tempo runs; NPS notes fragile boulders off-trail hazards.
Safety Considerations
Exposed ridge winds; microbursts flip runners. Rattlesnakes in rock piles summer. Slabby scrambles slick post-rain; poles prevent slips. Afternoon crowds bottleneck; dawn patrols best. Leave No Trace: no cairn building.
Essential Gear
Altra Lone Peak shoes for rock. Gregory Nano pack. Fox 40 whistle, Leatherman tool, NUUN tabs.
