About This Route
Fern Lake Trail offers an 8-mile round-trip advanced snowshoe from Moraine Park to Fern Lake at 9,500 feet, with 1,500 feet gain through dense forest and streams. Access via Fern Lake Road trailhead; pass The Pool and Arch Rocks. Steep sections demand experience; March 2024 conditions show bootpack to The Pool, deeper snow beyond. Respect closures and pack out toilet paper per Leave No Trace.
Safety Considerations
High avalanche terrain post-Pool; CAIC danger ratings often moderate-high. Steep chutes trigger slides; carry transceiver, probe, shovel. River ice breakup risks thin spots; probe before crossing. Deep powder leads to exhaustion; pace conservatively. Bear activity minimal but food storage vital. NPS urges pre-trip weather checks at nps.gov/romo.
