About This Route
Vía Francesa on Aguja Poincenot, part of the Fitz Roy group in Los Glaciares National Park, is a 500m moderate rock route (5.9, V+) with 12 pitches of excellent slabs and cracks. Access via Piedra del Fraile trailhead, 3-4 hour hike to Laguna de los Tres, then glacier to base. Ideal for parties building big wall skills in alpine setting. Adhere to park regulations; register at El Chaltén warden station.
Safety Considerations
Monitor hyper-intense Patagonian weather cycles; austral summer sees 50% stormy days. Use apps like PatagoniaClimbing.com for recent beta. Loose rock on ledges poses objective hazard; belay from gear anchors, not bolts. Approach crosses crevassed glacier; probe snow bridges, use rope teams. Wind chill drops temps below freezing; layer with Arc'teryx Gore-Tex shells. As per expedition medicine standards, remote areas over 1-hour from hospitals demand self-rescue plans. Practice crevasse rescue drills pre-trip.
Essential Gear
Single rack to 3, tricams for slabs, 60m rope sufficient but doubles safer for v-threads. Stove for snow melt, bivy sacks. PLB for emergencies.
