About This Route
Echo Lakes offers a serene yet adventurous canoeing route to access the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in Desolation Wilderness, California. Located just off Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe, this 2.5-mile paddle across Lower and Upper Echo Lakes connects directly to PCT Section 16. Paddlers launch from Echo Lakes Resort, where rentals are available, and navigate narrow channels between the lakes, surrounded by granite peaks and alpine meadows. This route shaves 2.5 miles off the hike, making it popular for PCT thru-hikers entering Desolation Wilderness. Water is calm in summer, but wind can whip up quickly; expect 1-2 hours paddling time one way. Follow Leave No Trace principles by packing out all waste and avoiding sensitive shorelines.
Safety Considerations
While beginner-friendly, hypothermia risks persist even in July due to cold Sierra snowmelt (water temps often below 50°F). Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms common in the Tahoe Basin; NPS recommends being off water by 2 PM. Strainers from fallen trees pose entanglement hazards in channels, and rocky shores demand precise maneuvering. Unbuckle PFDs if capsizing near PCT access points to swim free, per REI stream safety protocols adapted for paddling. Solo paddlers should inform someone of plans; cell service is spotty. Check Echo Lakes Resort conditions and USFS permits for Desolation Wilderness day use.
Essential Gear
Pack a USCG-approved PFD (Stohlquist Edge recommended for lake paddling), paddle (Werner Bend-It for control), dry bags (Sea to Summit), whistle, and bilge pump. Include a map (Nat Geo 803 Tahoe Rim Trail/PCT), first aid kit with waterproof bandages, and sun protection (Buff, polarized sunglasses). For multi-day PCT tie-ins, add bear canister (BearVault BV500). Rent canoes from Echo Lakes Resort if not owning; NRS Otter series rafts work for groups.
