About This Route
Big Eddy to Maupin stretch on the Deschutes River, close to PCT Section L (Sisters to Bend area), offers Class III rafting through central Oregon's basalt canyons. Launch near Sherars Falls (BLM permit), run 25 miles of consistent whitewater past fishing holes used by PCT side-trippers. Rapids like Boxcar and White River feature surf waves; ideal for day or overnight with PCT resupply at Maupin. Flows peak June-July (2000-5000 cfs); 6-8 hour descents. Adhere to ODFW fishing regs if combined with angling.
Safety Considerations
Bends accelerate currents into deep, fast holes with strainers; REI warns of foot entrapments like PCT stream risks. Boulders and undercut cliffs demand upstream ferry skills. Irrigated canal diversions drop levels suddenly. Afternoon winds build; launch early. Hypothermia in spring (40°F water); wetsuits mandatory below 60°F air. Group with experienced guides per BLM guidelines.
Essential Gear
PFD (Astral V-Eight), helmet (Dagger Phantom), paddle (Shaggy Werner), drybox (Pelican case). Wetsuit (Peak UK), booties, first aid (SAM Splint), headlamp for late finishes. Map (Deschutes River Guidebook by Greg Hatten).
