About This Route
The Goat Rocks Wilderness section (PCT miles 2260-2300) in Washington packs 40 miles of knife-edge ridges, Old Snowy Mountain (8,000+ feet), and McCall Glacier remnants into a backpacker's dream. From White Pass to Snoqualmie Pass vicinity, expect goat herds, wildflower meadows, and no facilities. Self-issue permits at trailhead; Gifford Pinchot NF rules apply. Iconic for day-to-multi-day loops.
Safety Considerations
Exposure on Packwood Glacier traverse; wind gusts 50mph, use ice axe early season. Stream crossings at Walupt Lake Creek hazardous: fast currents post-rain, use wading staff, unbuckle per REI stream safety tips. Hypothermia from fog banks; Gore-Tex jackets mandatory. Mosquitoes swarm July; permethrin-treat clothing. Rare but note societal issues; solo hikers stay vigilant near roads like SR 12. Low overall PCT fatalities, but falls from traverses real. Lightning minimal but monitor forecasts via inReach.
Essential Gear
Garmin 66i for navigation; Ursack AllMitey bear sack; Therm-a-Rest NeoAir pad. Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles for balance on talus.
