About This Route
The Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, trail in Lysefjord offers one of the most iconic trail running experiences in the Norwegian Fjords. This 8-kilometer round-trip route starts from the Preikestolen Mountain Lodge parking area near Forsand and climbs 500 meters to a dramatic plateau overlooking the fjord. Runners can expect a mix of rocky paths, wooden stairs, and boulder fields marked by red 'T' signs from the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). While popular with hikers, trail runners love the fast descent and stunning 360-degree views, but the route demands respect due to its steep sections and exposure. Average run time for fit runners is 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Follow Leave No Trace principles by sticking to trails and packing out waste, honoring Norway's allemannsretten (right to roam).
Safety Considerations
Adhere to the Norwegian Mountain Code: plan your trip and inform others of your route via the DNT app or a friend. Check Yr.no for weather forecasts and Varsom.no for any rockfall warnings, as sudden fog or rain can make granite slabs slick. Start early to avoid crowds, which peak midday in summer; overtaking requires caution on narrow ledges. Know your limits; exposed chain-assisted sections near the top have caused slips. Use a map and compass alongside GPS apps like Gaia GPS, as battery drain is common in cold, wet conditions. Turn back if visibility drops below 50 meters or winds exceed 15 m/s. Hydrate frequently from streams, but treat water with purification tablets. Wildlife is minimal, but watch for loose rocks kicked by uphill runners.
Essential Gear
Pack light yet comprehensively: technical trail running shoes with aggressive tread like Salomon Speedcross 6 for wet rocks; a lightweight windproof jacket such as Arc'teryx Gamma LT; merino wool base layers from Icebreaker for temperature regulation; a 10-15L hydration vest like Salomon Adv Skin 12 with 1L bladder and gels; fully charged phone in a waterproof case; DNT map of Ryfylke; compact first-aid kit with blister pads and tweezers; headlamp with extra batteries; whistle and emergency blanket. REI recommends layered clothing for 10-25°C swings.
