About This Area
Lake Gunn, along the Milford Road (SH94) in Fiordland, is a top beginner spot for rainbow and brown trout fishing from shore or inflatable craft. Managed by Fish & Game NZ, it has standard Southland regulations: one fish over 40cm, artificial lures only in some areas. No marine restrictions apply here, unlike the fiord; access via the DOC campground. Perfect for families, with nearby Mirror Lakes as backup.
Safety Considerations
Avalanches and slips close the road unpredictably in shoulder seasons; check NZTA updates. Hypothermia from cold lake water (8-12°C); wade cautiously on weed-free edges. Sudden Fiordland rain causes flash floods in feeder streams. Carry PLB as cell coverage drops beyond The Divide. Black water midges bite; use DEET. Follow Leave No Trace: release undersized fish quickly.

Use Sage Foundation fly rod, Simms waders, Orvis Hydros reel, and Redington float tube if boating. Safety: McMurdo FastFind PLB, Petzl headlamp for dawn/dusk, and comprehensive first-aid.
