Stirling Falls Advanced SUP Safety Guide safety guide

About This Route

Launch from Freshwater Cove for the 8-10km round-trip to Stirling Falls in Milford Sound's inner reaches. This advanced stand-up paddleboarding route features 150m-high cascades, bottlenose dolphins, and narrow passages, demanding strong fitness and surf skills. Popular with experienced NZSUP members, it follows the fiord's starboard side past The Chasm.

Safety Considerations

Inner Milford amplifies hazards: katabatic winds to 30 knots, reversing tidal flows up to 4 knots. Mandatory PFD, leash, and spray skirt per Maritime NZ. Bright flag essential against container-level cruise liners. Monitor barometer for pressure drops signaling storms. KASK advises against solo; minimum group of three. Hypothermia risk high; wetsuits alone insufficient in prolonged immersion. Avoid fall spray zones causing whiteouts. Log with Fiordland National Park visitor center.

Essential Gear

12'6" race SUP (Fanatic), high-buoyancy PFD, combat leash, helmet for rockfall, strobe light, GPS tracker (Garmin inReach), rehydration salts, emergency bivvy, and paddle tether.

Emergency Tips

Fallout: brace on board, signal helicopter with dye. VHF may fail in cliffs; rely on PLB. Tow injured buddy with paddle leash.

Scenario: Wind trapped paddlers in 2021; group formation and radios ensured rescue. Builds expedition readiness.
