About This Route
The Routeburn Track, a 32-kilometer Great Walk linking Mt Aspiring National Park to Fiordland near Milford Road, offers three to four days of alpine splendor. From Routeburn Shelter to Divide Shelter, highlights include the steep climb to Conical Hill, Earland Falls, and exposed ridges with views of Darran Mountains. This backpacking route demands strong fitness due to 1,200 meters of ascent. Fiordland's microclimate brings sudden snow, wind, and rain; DOC emphasizes checking avalanche risks in winter. Practice Leave No Trace by minimizing campfire use in fragile alpine zones.
Safety Considerations
Exposed sections above treeline risk high winds (gusts over 100 km/h) and whiteouts. Avalanches threaten winter/early season; consult DOC bulletins. Steep scree slopes on Harris Saddle demand caution. Kea birds steal gear; secure packs. Waterborne illnesses from giardia possible; purify all streams. Group travel recommended; notify DOC of intentions. REI protocols stress layered clothing for temperature drops from 25°C valleys to sub-zero ridges.
Essential Gear
60L pack (Deuter Aircontact) for multi-day loads. Windproof shell (Patagonia Triolet) and fleece midlayer. Four-season sleeping bag (Rab Neutrino) for cold nights. Gaiters (Kahtoola) against scree. Map/compass/GPS (Garmin inReach) as backup to DOC track notes. Headlamp (Black Diamond Spot) with extra batteries. Water filter (Sawyer Squeeze). Crampons and ice axe if early season per DOC advice.
