About This Route
The Milford Track, often called the finest walk in the world, spans 53.5 kilometers through Fiordland National Park from Glade Wharf on Lake Te Anau to Sandfly Point at Milford Sound. For elite trail runners, completing it as a day run offers an epic challenge with 1,070 meters of ascent and 1,270 meters of descent. Expect native bush, swing bridges, waterfalls like Lady Bowen Falls, the stunning Mackinnon Pass at 1,173 meters, and Sutherland Falls side trip option. This remote route features glacially carved valleys, kea birds, and pristine fjord views, but demands expert navigation and endurance. According to Department of Conservation (DOC) guidelines, day runs are restricted to experienced runners outside Great Walk season (late October to early May); always secure a ticket or permit via DOC.
Safety Considerations
Weather in Milford Sound changes rapidly; frequent rain makes trails slick with mud, roots, and rocks, increasing slip risk. Check MetService forecasts and DOC alerts for avalanche, flood, or high wind warnings. Run south to north (Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point) to tackle climbs early. Key hazards include isolation with no cell coverage beyond Clinton Hut, mandatory river crossings that swell post-rain, and sandfly swarms at lower elevations. Follow Leave No Trace principles: stick to track, pack out waste. Share your itinerary with DOC Te Anau Field Centre and a contact; experienced runners only, as per Fiordland standards. Train with similar ultras like Tarawera or Kepler Challenge.
Essential Gear
Pack light yet comprehensively: Salomon Speedcross 6 trail shoes for grip on wet rocks, Hoka Speedgoat 5 for cushioning long descents, Osprey Duro 6 hydration vest with 2L bladder and gels. Waterproof jacket (Arc'teryx Beta LT), merino base layers (Icebreaker), buff, gloves, and Patagonia Houdini wind shell. Garmin inReach Mini for SOS and navigation (pre-load GPX), map/compass, PLB like Ocean Signal rescueME, headlamp (Petzl Actik Core), first-aid kit (Compeed blisters, bandages, ibuprofen), whistle, multi-tool, 2,000+ calories (Clif Bars, Maurten gels), water purification (Katadyn BeFree). Gaiters (Kahtoola) prevent debris ingress.
Emergency Tips
Injury or weather turn: shelter at Clinton, Mintaro, or Dumpling Huts (radios available); activate PLB immediately. Hypothermia signs (shivering, confusion): insulate, hydrate, signal. River crossing trouble: link arms upstream, unclip pack. Evac from Milford Sound helicopter pad at Sandfly Point; DOC monitors track.
