Lake Marian Falls Track Safety Guide safety guide

About This Route

The Lake Marian Falls Track is a challenging 6-kilometer return day hike from Hollyford Road, 20 minutes from Milford Sound. It follows the Hollyford River through podocarp forest, crossing a swing bridge before a steep 800-meter climb on rock slabs to an alpine tarn beneath New Zealand's highest waterfall at 200 meters. DOC classifies it as advanced due to unmaintained sections; expect 4-6 hours round trip. Stunning glacier views reward the effort, but slips are common.

Safety Considerations

River crossings pose drowning risks after rain; DOC closes the track during high flows, check alerts. Rockfall and loose scree on the final ascent demand caution; helmet recommended. Extreme weather amplifies hazards: hypothermia in rain, heat exhaustion uphill. Mandatory DOC intentions registration. Good fitness required; not for beginners. Sandflies and wasps in summer; carry antihistamine. No facilities; self-reliant only.

Essential Gear

Climbing helmet from Petzl, via ferrata gloves for grip. La Sportiva boulder shoes or sticky-soled boots. 3-liter water capacity, electrolyte tabs. Rab lightweight waterproofs, Buff neck gaiter. Petzl headlamp for short days, multi-tool. Comprehensive first aid with compression bandages for ankle twists.
