About This Route
Homer Glacier, above Homer Saddle near Milford Road's Homer Tunnel, provides accessible ice climbing in the Darran Range. Routes range from Grade 2 snow couloirs to WI3-4 icefalls; 2-4 hours from Homer Hut. Ideal for intermediate alpinists honing crampon skills before Gertrude Saddle. DOC warns of warming glaciers; probe for moulins. Stunning overlooks to Milford Sound.
Safety Considerations
Serac fall and avalanche prime dangers; Homer Icefall collapses seasonally. Crevasses widen in summer melt; travel roped with stances. Whiteouts frequent; visibility drops to zero in minutes per NPS analogs. Sandflies plague approaches; DEET repellent vital. Follow IFMGA guide protocols: belay all leads, V-thread anchors.
