About This Route
The Lower Hollyford Track, 45 kilometers from Lake Gunn to Milford Road via Gunn's Camp, offers remote three-day backpacking in Fiordland. Features Humboldt Falls, Lake Alabaster, and pod camping. Less regulated than Great Walks, but DOC warns of isolation. Heavy rain floods the Hollyford River often.
Safety Considerations
Remote with no huts; self-sufficient camping only. Frequent slips close track. High wildlife: chamois, possums. DOC swingbridges wash out. Group minimum four.
Essential Gear
Freestanding tent (Big Agnes Copper Spur). Bear canister equivalent for rodents. Waterproof boots (Salomon Quest). Satellite phone (Iridium). Tarp for rain fly.
