About This Route
The Deep Water Basin Loop, just 10km from Milford Sound wharf, is an intermediate 25km gravel circuit through beech forest in Fiordland National Park. Accessed via unmaintained DOC track from SH94, it circles remote tarns and offers big-sky views toward the Darran Mountains. Suitable for 3-5 hour out-and-back with 500m climbing; popular with fat-bikers in shoulder seasons. DOC permits biking here under low-impact rules; join guided shuttles from Te Anau for safety. This route embodies Leave No Trace by sticking to formed paths, avoiding fragile podocarp understory.
Safety Considerations
Watch for rooty singletrack, boggy sections post-rain, and washouts from Hollyford River floods. No vehicle traffic, but trampers share trail; yield uphill. Black water leeches in damp areas; tuck pants in socks. Variable weather: pack layers for 10C drops. NZTA advises lights for shaded forests. Inspect bike: tubeless tires (Maxxis Ikon 2.35") excel on mud. Helmet compulsory per Land Transport Act; full-face recommended for rock gardens. Group ride advised; inform Te Anau i-SITE of plans.
