About This Route
The Raise snowboard area, operated by the Lake District Ski Club above Glenridding, offers accessible backcountry-style snowboarding in the Eastern Fells. Access via a steep hike from Glenridding Dock (grid ref NY 386169), towing up using the club's volunteer-operated rope tow when conditions allow. This north-facing slope provides consistent snow cover, ideal for practicing turns on un-groomed terrain with pitches up to 25 degrees. Expect 300-500m vertical descent from the top station at 650m to the car park. Popular with locals during prolonged cold snaps; check the club's blog and social media for tow operation status.
Safety Considerations
Follow the FIS Code of Conduct: look uphill before descending, yield to uphill traffic, and prevent runaway gear. Raise features unmarked rocks, icy patches, and sudden weather shifts common in the Lake District; wind chill can drop to -20C. Undertake personal risk assessments per Lake District Ski Club policy; all under-18s must wear helmets and be supervised. Stay within the flagged area to avoid cornices and cliffs on the sides. Avalanche risk is low but monitor via Met Office and Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS). Practice self-reliance: remote from Ullswater ambulances, 20-30 min response time.
Essential Gear
Layer with baselayer (merino wool like Icebreaker), mid-layer fleece (Patagonia), and waterproof shell (Arc'teryx). Include snowboarding helmet (Sweet Protection), goggles (Anon), and avalanche transceiver/shovel/probe for off-piste ventures. Crampons and ice axe for the bootpack ascent; skins optional for splitboards.
Emergency Tips
Prevent isolation: board in groups of 3+. Dial 999 (ask for Mountain Rescue, Lake District team covers Glenridding). Pin exact location via OS Map app or What3Words (e.g., Raise top: ///peaks.slung.shirt). Hypothermia signs? Shelter with group tarp, share body heat, sip warm fluids. Club first-aiders patrol during ops.
