About This Route
The Old Man of Coniston (803 meters) from Coniston village is a 9-kilometer out-and-back with 700 meters ascent via Walna Scar Road and Levers Water. Iconic copper mining history adds interest; views to Morecambe Bay.
Safety Considerations
Mine shafts pose fall risks; fence off but probe ground. Boggy sections near Levers Water; use boards. Ticks in ferns; permethrin-treat clothes. Rapid clag; MWIS essential. Groups preferred; ankle twists common on rocky paths.
Essential Gear
Boots (Hoka), gaiters, map OS OL6, whistle, energy bars. REI: headtorch for short days.
