Helvellyn (950m/3117ft), accessed via Striding Edge from Glenridding or Thirlmere, offers epic wild camping on its plateau above Red Tarn. Stay high above walls towards Nethermost Pike, respecting open access rules and Lake District National Park bylaws. This ridge route combines thrilling exposure with plateau campsites; ideal for overnighters linking to Dollywagon Pike.
Safety Considerations
Striding Edge is narrow with 100m drops; exposed scrambling requires via ferrata gloves (Black Diamond). Icy conditions linger into May; carry Black Diamond ice axe. Orrellite winds from Thirlmere whip up; monitor MWIS. Midge nets essential July-August. No fires; cook on Primus EtaPower stove. Practice LNT by packing all waste.
