About the Rongai Route
Rongai Route, a 6-7 day northern approach from Rongai Gate (2,000m), goes via Simba Camp (2,600m), Second Cave (3,500m), Kikelewa Cave (3,600m), Mawenzi Tarn (4,300m), Kibo Hut (4,700m), to Uhuru Peak then Mweka descent. Drier, less crowded, it offers wildlife views. Follow Leave No Trace; no wood collection in arid zones.
Safety Considerations
Drier but dust causes respiratory issues; buff masks essential. AMS from rapid Kikelewa gain; enforce acclimatization hikes. Mawenzi's knife-edge ridge risks exposure. Guides spot buffalo tracks. Less rain but flash thunderstorms; waterproof everything.
Preparation and Training
Dry heat training. Scenario: Dusty cough worsened to pulmonary edema; early steroids and descent critical.
Route-Specific Tips
Elephants near Nalemuru; camp securely. Saddle winds fierce; guy out tents. Reverse summit avoids crowds.
Environmental and Group Safety
Remote north side; satellite phone vital. Porter safety on steep Mawenzi paths.
