About This Route
Day 3's 16 km (10 miles) from Pacaymayu climbs to Runkuraqay Pass (3,950m/12,960 feet), passes ruins of Sayaqmarka and Phuyupatamarca, then descends through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna camp near 2,700 meters (8,860 feet). Narrow, mossy Inca stone paths wind via tunnels and staircases; highlights include restored terraces and orchid-filled jungle. This undulating section builds fatigue after Pass 2; expect 700m up, 1,200m down.
Safety Considerations
Trail erosion creates drop-offs; 30cm exposure common, use poles religiously. Cloud forest humidity breeds giardia; SteriPEN UV water purification mandatory. Lightning risk in afternoons; summit passes before noon. Insect-borne illness low, but DEET 30% for chiggers. Follow Incan Trail regulations: no litter, group with certified Alpamayo or Inkayni guides. Heat exhaustion on descents; salt tabs essential. Reference Leave No Trace for fragile archaeology.
