About This Route
From Pacaymayo valley (3,600m) to Phuyupatamarca (3,900m), this 5-6 km Inca Trail section weaves through cloud forest tunnels, passing Runkuraqay ruins and Sayacmarca fortress. Runners enjoy flowy singletrack with 400m gain over two passes, runnable in 1-2 hours. Mossy steps, avian calls, and orchid-lined paths create a mystical run, culminating at the 'Cloudy Place' baths for recovery soaks.
Safety Considerations
Cloud immersion reduces visibility to 10m; carry a whistle and light. Steep, overgrown edges risk falls, scan ahead. Humidity spikes dehydration; sip electrolytes constantly. Insect-borne diseases like dengue lurk; use DEET. Afternoon thunderstorms common even in dry season, outrun via descents. Follow Leave No Trace by staying on trail to protect fragile ecosystems. Fatigue from prior passes compounds; monitor cadence drops signaling bonk.
Essential Gear
Opt for breathable, protective kit: Altra Lone Peak shoes for zero-drop comfort, Nathan vapor vest for humid hauls, Montbell rain shell, Insect Shield clothing, and Anker power bank for devices.
