About This Route
Linking Inca Trail hubs, this 60 km traverse from Ollantaytambo to Santa Teresa follows the Inca Jungle Trail's lower canyons, mixing rail trail remnants, hydro plant roads, and singletrack along the Vilcanota-Urubamba River. Features zip-line crossings and hot springs finish, with climbs to 2,500 meters overlooking Machu Picchu satellite ruins. Shuttles from Cusco via KB Tambo Adventures; ideal post-acclimatization multi-day bikepack.
Safety Considerations
River flash floods post-rain; cross early AM. Steep ravine exposure demands focus; no headphones. Construction traffic near hydro plants; ear protection. Heat/humidity in jungle lowlands causes cramps; salt tabs vital. Acclimatize per Ian Taylor Trekking lessons: extra Cusco days. Trail erosion creates berms; feather brakes. Pack for self-sufficiency per NPS backcountry rules.
Essential Gear
XC/trail full-suspension (Yeti SB130), panniers (Ortlieb), SPOT tracker, brake rotors (160mm), and mosquito net. Include thermal layers for mornings.
