About This Route
Ramsey Cascades Trail provides a challenging 13-mile round-trip backpacking adventure to the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies, ending at Site 94 backcountry campsite near Ramsey Cascades. From the trailhead off Greenbrier Road, navigate 2,200 feet of elevation gain through old-growth forest, crossing log bridges over rushing streams. This remote route sees fewer crowds but higher risks from water hazards. Obtain permits online via recreation.gov; capacity limits protect fragile ecosystems. Expect 8-12 hours, with wet conditions amplifying dangers per NPS reports on stream crossings.
Safety Considerations
Swollen streams after rain cause drownings; test water depth and current before crossing, using poles as probes. Poison ivy and stinging nettles line trails; wear long pants and gaiters. Black bears frequent the area; store food in provided cables or hang properly. Lightning storms build quickly; monitor skies and seek low ground away from water. Trail washouts and blowdowns from recent hurricanes obstruct paths; check NPS alerts. Hypothermia from cascade spray and high humidity is common; change into dry clothes at camp. Follow REI's ten essentials and Leave No Trace by packing out all waste.
Essential Gear
Opt for durable gear like Gregory backpack, Danner trail boots for muddy sections, and Black Diamond poles. Essential: bear bag kit, water purifier for prolific streams (Katadyn Hiker Pro), emergency bivvy (SOL Emergency Bivvy), multi-tool, and satellite communicator. Insulate with Therm-a-Rest NeoAir pad and synthetic quilt for damp conditions. Include insect repellent (Sawyer Picaridin) for summer black flies and a map/compass as GPS fails in gorges.
Emergency Tips
Stream crossing mishap: Crawl upstream if swept, grab overhanging branches. Injury: Splint and signal with mirror or whistle. No cell service; use PLB and note 'Ramsey Cascades Site 94' location.
