About This Route
The South Kaibab Trail offers one of the most exhilarating trail running experiences in Grand Canyon National Park, dropping steeply from the South Rim to Cedar Ridge. This 6-mile round-trip run (3 miles each way) features dramatic switchbacks, exposed ridgelines, and stunning vistas of the canyon's inner gorge. Starting at 7,200 feet elevation, you descend 1,120 feet to 6,080 feet at Cedar Ridge, a perfect turnaround point for runners building confidence on technical terrain. Popular with speed-goats for its efficiency compared to the longer Bright Angel Trail, this route showcases redwall limestone formations and distant views of the Colorado River. NPS recommends it for day use, but trail runners must respect the no-water policy between the rim and Tipoff.
Safety Considerations
Extreme temperature swings define Grand Canyon trail running safety on South Kaibab. Rim highs hit 90°F (32°C) in spring, while inner canyon spots soar past 100°F (38°C); pack 1 liter of water per hour and electrolytes like Nuun tablets to combat dehydration, a leading cause of NPS rescues. Loose scree and steep drop-offs demand focus; stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from edges per NPS guidelines to avoid falls, which claim lives yearly. Monsoon season (July-August) brings flash floods; check weather at the Backcountry Information Center. Follow Leave No Trace by yielding to hikers, especially uphill traffic, and pack out all waste. Acclimatize to altitude over days if possible, as hypoxia mimics heat exhaustion symptoms. Run early dawn or dusk to dodge peak heat, and inform a partner of your itinerary via the NPS voluntary permit system.
