About This Route
Kaibab Plateau backcountry ski touring spans 1,200 square miles north of Grand Canyon, with entry from FR-22 or FR-611 near Tusayan. Routes like the Rainbow Rim Trail (18 miles groomed base) or open glades near Mt. Trumbull offer powder stashes and rolling terrain. Intermediate to advanced, with 300+ inch bases December-March. No permits needed for day use, but check Kaibab National Forest fire bans. LNT mandates packing out waste; use wag bags in dry camps. Combine with South Rim access for hybrid trips.
Safety Considerations
Plateau winds sculpt massive drifts; test snowpack daily via pit profiles. Low-angle terrain hides wind slabs; CAIC zones apply. Bighorn herds charge intruders; yield wide. Frostnip hits fast at 9,000 feet; chemical handwarmers in pockets. Icy alders snag tips in glades; duct tape skis preemptively. NPS echoes REI: buddy system, turn back at doubt. UV index triples on snow; glacier glasses mandatory.
Essential Gear
Lightweight XC or telemark setup (Whitewoods tele skis). BCA avy pack, skins, and kicker skins. First aid with blister kit, thermarest pad.
