About This Route
Tackle 6-8 miles on vast St. Mary Lake from Wild Goose Island overlook dock or Baring Landing, crossing to the eastern shore near St. Mary Falls. Largest lake in Glacier (10 miles long), framed by Red Eagle Mountain, advanced paddlers only due to fetch. Windswept but scenic; beach sparingly on gravel bars. Mandatory NPS AIS clean at St. Mary entrance.
Safety Considerations
Fierce east winds build 4-6 foot swells rapidly; forecast via NOAA marine. 45-55°F frigid water demands drysuits. Exposed crossings risk fatigue; segment into legs. Rare but motorized tour boats, radio check-in. High elevation sunburn; lightning storms common afternoons.
Essential Gear
Starboard Generation LT 12'6" SUP; Epic Vantage paddle. Critical: Mustang Survival drysuit PFD hybrid, Ronix KOAL leash, MSR dry bags, ACR ResQLink PLB, Garmin inReach.
