Gunsight Pass Snowboarding Safety Guide safety guide

About This Route

Gunsight Pass, located in the heart of Glacier National Park, offers one of the premier backcountry snowboarding descents in the Northern Rockies. Start from the Sperry Chalet trailhead after a skinning or snowshoe ascent of about 3,000 vertical feet to reach the 6,940-foot pass. The descent follows a north-facing bowl with consistent 35-40 degree pitches, dropping into Gunsight Lake basin for up to 2,500 feet of creamy powder on good days. This route demands expert-level skills due to its remote location, 10+ miles round trip, and exposure to alpine terrain. NPS recommends checking current conditions via the Glacier National Park avalanche forecast, as the pass sits above active glaciers like Sperry Glacier.

Safety Considerations

Avalanche risk is extreme here; Gunsight Pass has seen multiple Class 3 and 4 slides historically. Follow AIARE Level 2 protocols: always travel with a partner, dig pits for snowpack analysis, and avoid cornices at the pass crest. Glacier travel hazards include hidden crevasses beneath snow bridges; roping up with a 30m dynamic rope is mandatory per NPS guidelines. Whiteout conditions from Pacific storms can disorient riders, so monitor NWAC forecasts. Hypothermia strikes fast at these elevations; layer with Gore-Tex shells from Arc'teryx and merino base layers from Smartwool. Wildlife is minimal in winter, but practice Leave No Trace by packing out all waste.

Essential Gear

Beyond your splitboard setup like the Jones Flagship with Voile bindings, pack BCA avalanche transceiver, Black Diamond shovel and probe, Petzl harness with prusiks for crevasse rescue, and MSR snowshoes for low-angle approaches. Helmets from Giro are non-negotiable; add Oakley goggles and Black Diamond Alpine FLZ skis poles for control.
