About This Route
The Tengboche Monastery snowshoe loop starts at 3,860 meters, circling the sacred site with views of Ama Dablam and Everest on clear days. This 8-10 km intermediate loop from Tengboche teahouses explores snow-covered ridges and forests, descending briefly to Devuche nunnery before reclimbing. Winter snowshoeing here, from late December to early February, offers solitude post-monsoon crowds, but ridge-top winds amplify exposure. Plan 4-6 hours, ideal after acclimatizing in Namche.
Safety Considerations
High winds at the exposed monastery ridge can cause whiteouts; monitor via apps like Windy for gusts over 50 km/h and postpone. Crevasse-like hidden gaps in snow bridges over streams pose risks; probe with poles constantly. Follow REI's cold-weather guidelines: prevent frostbite with balaclavas and mittens. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms like headaches intensify here; use Diamox prophylactically if cleared by a doctor, and descend to Pangboche if severe. Group travel aligns with NOLS wilderness protocols; share itineraries with lodge owners.
Essential Gear
Atlas Helium snowshoes excel on variable crust, paired with Leki Makalu poles. Layer with Patagonia Nano Puff insulation, Smartwool socks, and Salomon gaiters. Essential: Garmin inReach Mini for SOS, UV-protective Julbo sunglasses against snow glare, and a Thermos for hot drinks. Microspikes and an ice axe for short steep sections.
Emergency Tips
Wind chill emergency: seek monastery shelter immediately. For crevasse fall, self-arrest with axe; yell location to partner. AMS: oxygen canister from Tengboche clinic or rapid descent to Orsho.
