Kala Patthar Mountaineering Safety Guide safety guide

About This Route

Kala Patthar (5,644m) offers a non-technical mountaineering ascent from Gorak Shep, the gateway to Everest Base Camp at 5,364m. Follow the rocky trail past EBC viewpoint, scrambling steep scree and icy patches to the summit cairn for panoramic Pumori and Everest views. Ideal acclimatization climb post-Lobuche; 3-5 hours round trip, but technical in wind or snow.

Safety Considerations

AMS strikes fast at this altitude; ascend only after EBC arrival, descend if headache persists. Loose scree causes slips; high winds (60+ km/h) erode visibility. Ice on ridges post-dusk; start pre-dawn. Spring (April-May) best per Nepal Met Department. Permits via Sagarmatha National Park (NPR 3,000). Apply Leave No Trace: bury human waste above 4,000m, no single-use plastics.

Essential Gear

YakTrax for traction, Black Diamond Alpine Trekking poles, Buff for windburn. Layer Marmot Helium jacket over thermals; Black Diamond Storm 450 headlamp for early starts. Personal first aid with ibuprofen per REI wilderness medicine.

Emergency Tips

Exhaustion/AMS: Turn back at false summit; oxygen canister from Gorak Shep lodges. Fall: Self-arrest with poles. Evac to Pheriche; radio HRA on VHF Channel 6.
