About This Route
Chhukung Ri (5,550 meters) to Dingboche offers advanced backcountry snowboarding over 800 vertical meters of north-facing chutes and tree-line transitions in the Imja Valley. Start from Chhukung base (4,730 meters), skin up the east ridge for open faces linking to Dingboche pastures. Avoid the Imja Tsho lake moraine; end at Imja Hotel. Features creamy powder post-storm, with Lhotse and Nuptse panoramas. Acclimatize via EBC side trek: Tengboche to Pangboche, then Chhukung detour (Day 6). 30-45 minute descent; 3-hour ascent. Follow Leave No Trace; no littering near sacred mani walls. Ideal for riders with prior high-altitude experience.
Safety Considerations
Slope angles hit 40 degrees in chutes; slab avalanches per DHM warnings require Rutschblock tests. Hypoxia impairs judgment; HAPE symptoms like dyspnea demand instant descent. Cornice drops over ridges; probe first. Nightly freezes create boilerplate ice. Group of 4 minimum with IFMGA guide; apps like FATMAP for route beta. REI stresses ferro rods for stove-less emergencies and UV protection against snow blindness.
