About This Route
The Sulphur Mountain Trail is an advanced 5.5 km one-way ascent (or 11 km round-trip) from Banff Upper Hot Springs, gaining 700 meters to Sanson's Peak. Elite runners love this steep grind paralleling the gondola, through subalpine forests to cosmic ray station views of Mount Rundle. Rocky, rooty sections demand technical footing. Descend via gondola if fatigued ($). Best July-August for dry conditions. Parks Canada reports frequent use; share trail with hikers.
Safety Considerations
Extreme terrain risks: loose scree, exposure on upper ridge. Bears and elk in lower forests; spray ready, groups essential. Altitude (2450m summit) hits fast; acclimate first. Hypothermia from wind chill even in summer. Check weather.banff.ca for microclimates. Rockfall and avalanches possible early/late season. No water sources; carry plenty. Follow Ten Essentials from REI.
Essential Gear
Salomon Ultra Glide shoes, Leki Micro Vario poles, Frontiersman bear spray, Coros Vertix 2 altimeter watch, Patagonia Nano Puff for summit chill, Katadyn filter if extending, Clif Bloks fuel.
Emergency Tips
Exposed fall: Self-arrest with poles. Bear: Fight aggressively. Medical: Descend or signal gondola; Parks Canada chopper 403-762-1470. PLB recommended.
Real save: Runner rescued via inReach after cliff slip in 2021 fog. Train on Tunnel first. Leave No Trace: no off-trail shortcuts. This vert king preps for ultra events like Valley of the Gods.
