About This Route
Ghost Lakes (three alpine gems) open May 17 to September 1, accessed via Ghost Lakes Trail (10km return hike from trailhead off Trans-Canada Highway). Fly fish for cutthroat trout amid pristine backcountry. Moderate hike-in rewards solitude, but elevation (1700m) and remoteness amplify risks. Short season; check avalanche bulletins off-season.
Safety Considerations
Hike prepared; trail rocky with elevation gain. High winds, hypothermia even July. Single-file wading only; no groups crowding spots. Bear country extreme; travel noisy. Permit mandatory; no multi-hooks. Decontaminate gear per Parks Canada.
Essential Gear
Park permit, fishing license, backpack fly rod (Orvis Clearwater), trekking poles doubling as wading staff, emergency bivvy, SPOT device, high-energy food, UV water bottle.
Emergency Tips
Trail injury: Self-evacuate downhill. Lost: Follow cairns to highway. Lightning: Crouch isolated. Signal highway traffic with mirror.
Elite spot for skilled anglers; train with REI courses first.
