About This Route
The 71-mile AT traverse through Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) from Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap features Clingmans Dome, Charlies Bunion, and Icewater Spring shelter. Popular sections include 16-mile Springer Mountain to Clingmans via Newfound Gap Road access. Dense rhododendron tunnels, 3,000-foot climbs, and 8 million annual visitors per NPS stats. Bear country extraordinaire; mandatory bear hangs or canisters.
Safety Considerations
Bears habituated to humans; follow NPS protocols: hard-sided canisters only (BV450), hang 10x12 feet if no canister. Black bears injure few, but food-conditioned ones charge. Hyperthermia in summer humidity (90F+); hike early, use Buff cooling towels. Flash floods in Spence Field area; check USGS gauges. Ticks, Lyme disease rampant; EPA-registered permethrin. Crowds at Alum Cave; situational awareness per ATC: no headphones, share plans via GSMNP permit system. Poor cell; personal locator beacon essential. Water abundant but giardia-prone; boil or use Katadyn tablets.
Essential Gear
Park map (GSMNP official), bear canister, rain poncho (Sea to Summit), headlamp (Coast HP7), comprehensive first-aid, stove fuel, extra socks (Darn Tough), 4L water, satellite device (Zoleo). Leki Micro Vario poles for steepness.
Emergency Tips
Bear attack: fight back with bear spray (Counter Assault). Lost: mark position, three fires. Rangers at (865) 436-1200; Newfound Gap has ambulance access.
