About This Route
Grayson Highlands State Park section of the AT in Virginia/North Carolina border delivers alpine balds, wild ponies, and Wilburn Ridge views at 5,000+ feet. Hike 8-10 miles round-trip from Massie Gap trailhead to Mount Rogers summit (via AT/Highlands Trail), climbing 2,000 feet through open meadows. ATC partners with NPS for maintenance; popular for day hikes and overnights at backcountry sites. Ponies roam free, but lightning-prone balds demand respect per Mount Rogers NRA protocols.
Safety Considerations
High winds and sudden storms common; monitor NWS for Grayson County. Lightning kills more hikers here than bears; follow NPS rule: avoid balds during storms, crouch low if caught. Black bears active; use bear canisters (required in some zones) and IGBC-approved Ursacks. Ponies bite; maintain 100-foot distance per park rules. Hypothermia risk year-round; pack Patagonia Nano Puff. Ticks peak May-July; tuck pants into socks. Share plans with ATC's hiker's register; cell service spotty, so carry SPOT Gen4. Water scarce on balds; carry 4L and treat with Aquamira drops.
Essential Gear
Navigation (Nat Geo 780 map), insulation (down jacket), rain gear (Frogg Toggs), headlamp (Petzl Actik), first-aid with moleskin, multi-tool (Leatherman), extra food, emergency bivy ( Adventure Medical Kits), water purifier, whistle. Sturdy boots like Salomon Quest 4 for boggy trails.
Emergency Tips
Lightning: spread out group, avoid tallest objects. Injury: fire three shots or flares if equipped. Rangers at (276) 579-7092; helipad at Massie Gap. Bear charge: play dead, protect neck.
